If there are 80 people in the chat room right now and nobody is talking, what's the purpose of the chat room?

it seems some people clamored for it.don't know why.

It doesn't seem to work for me, when I type, it doesn't show up. not sure why.

I can't get it to work either, my name shows up but it shows people in there identified as guests, what is that all about?

I haven't been able to figure it out either. And sometimes it shows more people in the chat room than it shows even on the site!
