Kindler, Gentler AMEX...

I am a little under three months past due on my Platinum account. My minimum payment is $3620. As with most of the forum members, I had no success in getting AMEX to participate in my CareOne dmp so I called them. Having had a green AMEX card back in the early 90's that I was past due on from time to time, I expected the same AMEX Black Ops/SWAT approach in telling me what a POS I was and making me feel like an idiot that I couldn't send them a 'paltry' $3600, "why did you charge the card up that much if you knew that you couldn't pay", etc.
Wow, what a difference this time around ! I was given two payment plan choices: Pay the minimum over 6 months and close the account OR Pay a third of the minimum due every month for three months and keep the account open. Since my wife and I badly wanted to keep the account open but had abandoned all hope of that being an option, we are going to bite the bullet (hard) and go with the three month plan.
I ignored their calls for the better part of two months until I read a few other posts on here in reference to negotiating with AMEX. I just joined this site today and it is already paying dividends. Thanks to all who participate. There aren't many feelings worse than that sick, hopeless feeling of being up to your eyeballs in debt.
