I have about $19,000 in credit card debt with my husband.

I've been looking into various programs. I started to sign up with Credit Solutions debt settlement program and then read the reviews here and thankfully didn't sign up.

I'm not sure whether to go with a dmp or debt settlement. My cards are way way way over due and at this point its a miracle I haven't been sued I'm just waiting for the day I get served and it scares me. I tried to talk to the original creditors but they just tell me to go through the collection agencies. The CA keep telling me they want like $500 a month EACH. I can't afford that!

If anyone has any advice or knows of any good companies please let me know. I just don't want to get ripped off.

At this point you have 2 options: debt settlement or Bankruptcy. Personally I would try settlement first, and if you find that you don't qualify, then I would recommend a BK lawyer. Check out RAM Financial Services. They're a debt company who will analyze your situation and recommend you on an action and direction to take. Good company.

Part two of Getting Back to Basics picks up on how we deal with collection agencies and collection lawyers. We deal with collection agencies and collection lawyers different than we do we original creditors. These people are hard to deal with and they are aggressive, remember these people are making percentages on what they collect. If your account or accounts is being collected on by someone other than the original creditor it is good to read through The Fair Debt Collection Practices act.

When we understand our rights we are more relaxed and bill collectors cannot bother us. Getting educated on the collection topics will help to gain excellent settlements with collection agencies. Here is how you must negotiate your unsecured credit card debt with bill collectors or collection agencies and collection lawyers as they call themselves, follow these guidelines to save on time, money and aggrevation.
