They had my wife's name exactly right, but- really- there is no judgment against her and she owes nothing to anyone (yes- that rare American). So we knew they wrong, but couldn't figure out how this had started. They didn't have her SS number and kept asking for it- she didn't give it to them. They never identified themselves- that didn't give her a good feeling about telling them anything. She has just printed her credit report and it's totally clean. I suppose, if they wanted to, they could come across her SS number by using a computer, but that would cost them time and money.
We reasoned that since the only thing they did know was readily available- the phone number under her name- perhaps the trouble was one of mistaken identity.
I did a Zaba search using her name, including the middle initial, and -lo!- three phone numbers with her name popped up. I tried them and two had been disconnected. The third number answered, but claimed no one with my wife's name was there. In fact, the said no before I had finished giving the name.
OK- I called AT&T (are you beginning to suspect something...?) and found out that, yes, someone with a name exactly the same as my wife had opened the two now-disconnected accounts. One- they were still attempting to collect on. The other had been sold to the debt collectors. The woman at AT&T basically said, that-yes- we know it's not you, but why worry?- they can't do anything to you.
Well- anyone who has received phone calls from these folks know it's very nasty stuff that comes out. I called Joel and told them what was going on- they said they had now wiped the number from their system.
I have my doubts, and am ready for more to come. We will sue- we've done it before and we'll do it again.

Definitely, record any and all phone conversations you have with this CA. Be sure to check if your state is a 1-party or 2-party state when it comes to recording phone calls.
I might also recommend sending them a total cease and desist letter, advising then your wife is not the person they are looking for and they are continuing to harass the wrong person. Just include her name and the phone number they are calling on the letter, they already have that so it's not providing them with nothing they don't already know. I wouldn't release any additional information like address and ESPECIALLY social security number.

Be sure to send the letter certified mail/return receipt requested; and hold onto that green card once you get it back. Once they receive this letter, and they continue to call after they have received it, then I would definitely sue the stew out of them. And I would be willing to bet my right arm they will continue to call and harass.

Yeah, it's a shame the way some CA's harass and incessantly call third parties like that, even after they are either told the contact information of the person they are looking for, or told not to call back ever again. It's like I say, they treat that third party as a "surrogate debtor" since they can't reach the actual debtor.
I'm going through a pretty similar situation myself, with a CA trying to reach my brother. I have told them at least 3 times I don't talk to my brother, haven't spoken to him in years, and no I can't give him a message since I don't speak to him. If they call one more time, I'm going to sue them!

Oh yes- I know he truly exists, in his evil little demi-monde. What he doesn't know (yet) is that I know the home addresses and phone numbers of most of his associates. I am nothing if not resourceful. The internet is a wonderful thing.

I Gave him a call one night while he was having dinner. I explained that his employess were calling and harassing me for someone else that didn't live at my address, he promised that he would take care of the problem immediately, I haven't heard from them since then. Guess they didn't like the tables being turned on them when they start receiving calls at night.
Yeah, pretty novel solution. Maybe I need to try that!

I have also been receiving phone calls for a person that I am not and I have had my current phone number for 6 years. My states "Do not Call List" does not allow you to complain about 800 numbers. I was told by the state attorney generals office that requests for the calls to stop had to be made in writing. The phone company has a service that for $5.00 a month, you can block 800 calls.
