I had credit card for a dept store. CA has been calling trying to collect. The last payment was in 1998. I live in North Carolina. WHat is the best avenue to take.

The statute if limitations has long expired and its been more than 7 years so it shouldn't even be on your credit report. I would send them a debt validation letter sent certified mail to prove the debt is valid "which they won`t be able to provide ". Be sure you don`t make a promise to pay them because that would restart the SOL so they can sue you and thats what these junk debt buyers are banking on. Plus even if the debt was valid " which it isn't " North Carolina is a non-garnishment state so even then they would have had an extremely difficult time collecting on the debt.
