is it better to continue communication with a belligerent collections agency who continuously threatens and verbally abuses me every time i talk to them? i should i just stop contact with them?

No one should have to be verbally abused and threatened. Have they sent you anything i writing(dunning letter) or has communication only been via phone? What state do you live in? I would start recording the calls and depending on what state you're in, you may not have to inform them. If they have sent you a dunning letter, respond with a DV letter. I would state that calls to you at work jeopardize your employment and inform them that all calls to your home and cell are recorded.
