Hello all I am down and out. I am looking for some advice on whether to settle with my creditors myself or use an agency. My wife and I owe over 60 k in credit card debt. I am not behind as of today but tomorrow I am screwed. My credit cards are all from USAA. Should I seek a 3rd parties help or can I do this myself

You have to be careful with the debt settlement companies, anyone that charges you upfront is taking you for a ride. I helped one of my buddies get out a similar situation. We used a company in Florida that had a lawyer working for him against the credit card companies. If you are interested I can put you in touch with the people he used. Send me an email and hopefully they can help you. I know they didn't charge him anything upfront for a consult so your don't have anything to lose. My email is removed by Shazzers per TOS rules.

Are you in the Military ? You said the debt is with USAA. The reason I ask is if you are considering debt settlement you will need to run that option by your commanding officer to make sure he will sign off on it because you can get your security clearance taken , demoted or possibly even discharged for going delinquent on bills.

You can get out of debt by yourself and do not need to pay a third party to get you there. Here is how you can do it.

1. First take all your credit cards and put them in a zip lock bag, place that bag into a large tupperware type container, fill the container with water, put the lid on top and place the container in the freezer. This may sound crazy, but the next time you want to use your credit card you are going to have to take the time to thaw them out and that will give you a moment to decide if you really want to add more debt to your current situation.

2.Make a list of all your credit debt and the interest rate you are paying for each one.

3. Put the credit cards in order according to interest rate you are paying.

4. Now pay the minimum payments on all the credit cards except the one with the highest interest rate. Pay as much as you can on that card every month. Send multiple payments, even if you find you have $10 extra dollars send it to the credit card company. Once you pay off the highest that credit card take all the money you were paying on that and move to the next highest and put every extra cent into that card while paying the minimums on the remaining cards. 4. Continue this cycle until all credit cards are paid off.

It may take you a couple of years, buy you can do it. Commit to living within your means and get out of debt. I have talked to many millionaires and their scheme for getting rich...spend less than you make. Sounds simple, but it works. Good luck!!
