Its that time of the year, and the scammers will be out in full force,so make sure you never give your personal information over the phone and never agree to call them back buy using a 900 number or even some numbers that begin with an eight.
Not all numbers beginning with "8" are toll-free. For example, the area code 809 serves the Dominican Republic. If you dial this area code, you'll be charged international long distance rates. So everyone be very careful this Christmas season, and dont let the sharks take your money.

I think the number one scam right now, are the credit card companies offering a $2,000 unsecured credit card, but you have to pay the $225 membership fee up front by providing a checking account number.

With any phone transacation, you should ask for the name of their company, and a phone number to call back. If they claim this can only be done during this phone call...I would highly suggest declining. Even if you actually applied with this company, you should be able to call them back.

Mike

OK, that would make more sense. The area code 250 is Brittish Columbia (Canada). Did you just recently call them. That seems to be awfully high, even for calling Canada. I've possibly even called that number when dealing with Sonic, but this would have been on my cell phone, and usually my international calls aren't that expensive. I call Germany on a weekly basis, and those calls are only around $3-$4.

I would check with your LD provider and see if they're is something they can do, or even your local phone service if they aren't the same.

Using a payphone will be quite helpful. In this way, your personal info will remain protected and there won't be any tampering on the billing amount also.

On this note, I will also say that if any loan company asks for any money upfront, you need to give a second thought to it. No legitimate business will take money before the loan amount is deposited in the account. (Thanks Mike for pointing this out)
