Hello, I am now about 30 days late on my cards and gatting calls daily. What am I supposed to say to them. I did oay one just to get them off the phone. Do I just say no I can't? I sent letters asking to reduce the debt to 50%, stop the interest, and except monthly payments. Should I ask them I they received my letter? I'm not even sure if I did a good budget, what if I can't make those new monthly payments? Help Please.

At only around 30 days late, the companies more than likely won't settle or even reduce your interest rate. I know- I'm current on one of my credit cards which jumped up to 26.99% apr and they said they couldn't do a darned thing as far as a hardship program or reducing the rate, even though I was very vehement that I would certainly default. As long as you are current or only 30 days past due, they aren't going to listen or want to cooperate. If you don't look into a debt management or consolidation program, you will more than likely only begin to be able to "haggle" over the debt owed to these companies around 120 days late when the account is getting closer to being charged off.

ps I am going to do the debt settleing on my own... no company to pay:) One place I checked said to wait till I have 50% of the small balance, then try to settle with them, If they say No I should more on to the next card. .... just got another call while I was writing this, I told them I am working on my monthly budget to see how much I will have left to pay if I have any. Is it best to just not answer the phone. Should I tell them to close my account? Or will they do that anyway? Thank you for your help.

One thing I will mention is that it's not a good idea to ignore the calls when they come in. Even though it isn't pleasant ~ it's best to face the issue rather than let it all go to voicemail. I've heard plenty of times that when they can't contact you...they'll try other ways such as calling family members or contacting you at work.
