I have gotten myself in a real jam and have been reading all these posts, but am overwhelmed and don't know where to start. My fiance had liver failure back in March and got a transplant in May, but the costs going back and forth to the hospital became overwhelming and, stupid me, I took out payday loans. Now I don't have any money left on payday and am probably going to lose my house. I have 7 pdl. I live in PA. I looked back at my statement and best I could figure that I paid is:

PayDayOne - Currently $900 - have had this loan for quite some time (over 2 years) and keep "requesting increase", probably paid a minimum of $2400 in interest to day. Paid them off a few times, but went right back.

PayDayMax - $500 - paid - 300.00 fees only
Cash Direct Express -$400 - paid 324.00 fess only
Think Cash - $500 - paid 283.76 - fees/principle
Biggest-Cash - $300 - paid 180.00 - fees only
Cash Central - $300 - paid 400.00 fees/principle
EZ PayDayCash - $400 - paid 360.00 fees only

So where do I start? Any help would be appreciated. I really don't want to close my checking account if I don't have to as it is with a credit union that I've been with forever and really like their service.

First, I hope your fianc???? is doing okay and wish a complete recovery.
You came to the right place. I have been lurking for a while myself due to being completely embarrassed by the number of loans I had. It's so easy to fall into the trap.

Others here can offer so much better solutions than I, so I defer to them.

I also have a credit union account. I was able to close the first account and open another with obviously, a new account number. There was one incident when the closed account was reopened. I didn't find out about it until I got a bill for $600 dollars in bounced debit fees. Several PDL companies tried multiple times to debit the old account. When I went in to ask about it at my branch. They had no idea as to why the old account was re opened and they could find absolutely no record of the person noted on my account as authorizing it to be re opened as even working at the credit union in any capacity. I did not have to pay anything. And a service rep emails me or calls me when an ACH debit tries to come through on the old account. I gotta give my credit union major props there.

Yep...everyone here has had PDL's, too. So..wanna say you're not alone. Just wanna give you some 'personal experience' advice. I know some PDL's, in the state of PA, are illegal. I just don't know which ones. I actually was told ALL of them are, but, I don't know for sure. I know PDL's can get overwhelming. Can you close your account and open another one? That may help, too. PDL's can't get money from a closed account. I'm no expert, either, on PDL's..however......i know someone, on this forum, will give you great advice on what to do. Lotsa experts here!!

The first thing you need to do to secure your bank account close it or have the bank put a hard ach debit block (freeze) on it. Do not contact any of your pdl's until this process is taken care of. Please read the sticky about closing your bank account.

Once your bank account is secure follow with C & D letters to your pdl companies, their are sample letters posted on this site.

I have 10 PDL's (live in PA too), and although some are illegal, some are not (PayDayOne and ThinkCash are legal for sure). As it was said above - you MUST close your account. If you cannot pay them and need to negotiate a payment plan, they will not listen unless they cannot get to your money. CLOSE YOUR BANK ACCOUNT. After that, you send them the letters and contact them and see, if they offer some settlement (that you may be able to accept). Also, find out which are illegal, as those you can treat differently - basically you'd just return the principal, with no interest. The legal ones should be your priority. Hopefully someone will be able to help you with that. After you close the account, and before you send the letters, inform your payroll (probably in writing) that you revoke any wage assignments you may have with the PDLs. Be ready for a lot of phone calls. You should probably also inform you references, most of the time they will try to contact them too. It's a big headache, but you can go through it. The day you will have a control over your paycheck you will start feeling better and the future will look much brighter.
