A collection agency contacted us about 3-4 years ago saying my husband had a debt with them from a credit card. It was over $5000 at the time, and we have been paying it monthly since them. Lately we have been making bigger payments and we just own them a little over $1300.00. This was from something my husband may or may have not done before we got married (or I would know) and that's when I realized I wanted to know what the debt was about. I called the agency and they told me it was from an old credit card, and they do not have the records. So now...this is reported in his credit report, and even we have been paying them, still shows has a negative account with the current balance. should we keep paying for this since they cannnot prove the debt? Should I contact the credit bureau or are they going to say that, since we are making payments, this means we own it?

This is being collected thrid party.
I called the agency now and disputed it. They were surprised we are just disputing it now, but she said that if I want I can do it. She also said it might take about 1 year to get the proof.
The only thing she knows is that this debt is from a credit card that was open from 98-2003.
So now, she will send to the credit report that is being disputed. Is this good for the score or bad?
