I don't know what to do

I'm an idiot, i screwed up. About 3 years ago i received a Capitol One Credit card and i spent about 1200$ on it. I didn't make any payments. The total debt is now at around 4400$. I know, i screwed up and at 25, this is going to hurt me realy bad. But I dont know what i can do.
A collection agency has summoned me to court and i must appear december 10th at 9.00 (or, as the collector mentioned, you dont have to be there, but we will lock in your debt of 4400$.)
I spoke to a lawyer today (one of their free consultation offers) and he said i should just go meet them on my court date and offer them a settlement. Is this true? Should i get a company like this involved? Am i screwed?
I know i have to pay for this, im not trying to get out of any sort of payments but i do want it to be manageable. What's the best way i can do this?

Don't listen to the CA. Definitely go to court. If you don't show up at court, the judge will grant them a judgement against you. When you do go to court, ask the CA for validation during discovery; if they can't provide it, some judges have dismissed the cases or delayed it.

should i go ahead and send them an offer?
what is a validation during discovery? should i get a hold of my original invoices from Capitol One and take them to court?
Validation is making them prove that the debt is actually yours,
Validation is making them prove that the debt is actually yours, that the amount, interest, payments, etc. are correct, and that they have the legal right to collect on it, among other things. Without validation, I wouldn't offer them dime one.
Discovery is the legal process in which the parties to a suit produce documents or other evidence and give them to the opposing side. That way, everybody knows what's going on, and nobody gets blindsided. You have to ask the judge or file a motion to get discovery, it's not automatic.

Who is actually suing you? A CA does not have legal standing to file suit. Does Cap1 still own the account? Are they named as the Plaintiff? What state do you live in?
Your best bet is to try to resolve this before the court date.
Your best bet is to try to resolve this before the court date. Have you attorney negotiate a settlement with the credit card company so that you don't have to appear at court.
Debt Consolodation
Hello,
My Husband and I are approx. $55,000 deep in credit card debt. We live in California and have been doing quite a bit of research on debt consolodators,-but most of them have many complaints & have received F ratings from the better business bureau. Please help, any suggestions on who to speak with?
Thank-you for your time.
