Voice recorder?

Is it legal to use a voice recorder when you are talking to the creditor or collector? I got a very nice voice recorder in hand and am planning to use it when I do the negotiation over the phone. I do know that I have to tell them this call is being recorded but is this legal?
Thank you for your advice.

Some states (1 party state) do not require you to notify the other party and some states do (2 party state). Once you notify them that the call is being recorded, then it becomes legal.

If you are in a 2 party state you can still likely record. In all correspondence with the CA put in writing that all calls are recorded. Also at the start of any call simply inform them that they are being recorded and if they object, then they should hang up immediately. If they try to tell you they do not give permission, simply inform them that if they do not want to be recorded they must hang up, that by staying on the line they are acknowledging and accepting the recording of the call.
If you are lucky enough to live in a 1 party state...don't tell them a thing about the call being recorded. Trust me. I am from Texas, a 1 party state and it gives me a nice warm fuzzy to record a call and them inform the caller at the end that every illegal thing they just said has been recorded...boy do they freak out.

Thank you so much!!!!
I'm in CA now but I will be in South Alabama next year Jan. 5th.

That sounds like a fun thing to do!! HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
It gets better when you do it on Thx giving or xmas!!!

I get downright nasty when they call me on a legal holiday, the ones where even the government 'closes' down. They get at least a 5-10 minute stream of me berating them up one side and down the other...most of the time they just hang up because I won't let them get a word in edgewise.
Well, Cali is a 2 party state so do all that was suggested above, but once you get to Alabama you can record till your heart's content and not tell them until the very end...very effective if they broke the law during the call. I have even asked for a supervisor and played the call back and then pointed out ever violation and asked them if they would like to see me in court and to let a judge hear that tape. I know I likely was not talking with a real supervisor, but I love hearing them respond, "uh..uh..uh.."

Oh, to only ge able to see the persons face, when phone recording was played back for them!!
I'd take them to court anyway! Might as well get something for your trouble(s).
JMHO though. Take it for what it's worth, which ain't much!
