If they are not bluffing... which usually they are. If they send it to a lawyer... chances are they lawyer is acting as a collection agent. So they have to abide by the fdcpa. If they file suit call and work out a payment agreement before it gets to court. Do this will prevent them from reporting the judgement to the credit bureaus.

OK... To get started, how about some more information, if you please. What state do you live in, is this for a credit card account, and when was the last time you made a charge or payment on the account? Has CI sent you anything in writing, or are they just calling? If they're just calling, what are they saying to you?
