How did you end up with the car? The previous owner totalled it? Is Geico your insurance company, or are they the previous owner's insurance?
Basically whoever is the last owner of record (I would think that would be the salvage company), would have to request a duplicate/lost title. When a new one is issued, they could then sign-over and transfer the title to you. Then you can use it to register in your name.
car title
"I completely agree"
The car was found through the internet. My fiance ("at that time") and I went to Texas met with the gentlemen of the salvage company and bought the car.The day of the car inspection DMV of hattiesburg told my now x-fiance that geico was the last one that insured the car and that is who we should talk with to get another title. They even gave the phone number. The address of the gentle in texas was also thrown away with the title. My x-fiance has given up on helping with this. "So I'm on my on".
Okay, Geico would have paid out an insurance claim on the vehicl
Okay, Geico would have paid out an insurance claim on the vehicle to the previous owner, then they took the title and car, and sold it to the salvage company. Generally the salvage company would have had to transfer ownership and then they'd get a title in their name. So at this point, Geico is out of the picture and really couldn't do anything for you since they sold the car to the salvage company.
Although they may be able to tell you who the salvage company was that they sold it to... and that could help you.
Since the vehicle was never registered to you and the sale from salvage co to you was never recorded, everything it still in their name. They would need to apply for a duplicate/lost title. After that, then they could re-assign the title to you, at which point you could properly register the car under your name.
And so, the trick is, finding out (again) who you bought the car from. Their information should still be on the DMV's computers listed as the owner of that car. I would think the DMV could tell you the salvage co's name and address. (Although the DPPA may prohibit them from releasing that information to you.) But I think if you explained the entire situation, then that would be permissible purpose for them release the info to you. Or you could go to your police department, explain the situation (that you are trying to find out the name and address of the legal owner of the vehicle), and they might pull it up for you.
Mississippi
I bought a truck for 300 dollars and there is an application for the lost title. But not from the guy I bought it from. It is registered in Florida, and made its way to mississippi. The owner sold it to the guy i bought it from. We are on a military base so when someone leaves for deployment or tech-school they get rid of the cars. Do i Just ask for a lost title, help.
It's going to be hard, because 1) the secretary of state will on
It's going to be hard, because 1) the secretary of state will only issue a duplicate title to the currently registered owner. IE you couldn't apply for the title if the state thinks someone else owns the card. 2) If/when you got a duplicate title, the previous owner would need to sign off on the title as a selling the vehicle to you. Then you would usually submit that title, and pay sales tax, to the state for them to record you as the new owner.
