I have mixed feelings about settling my Target card. They handed the account over to a "law firm" which contacted me in August. I told them I was in a debt settlement program, and that they should contact them and negotiate the settlement. Instead, two months later in October, I got a summons. At this point, they decided to negotiate and finally got around to contacting my settlement company. I only got a 79% settlement. My opinion is, they could have done this back in August, but wanted more fees and interest to accrue so by offering what they did, they actually got around the amount of the original debt. Good thing, is it's settled, and the case was dismissed with no judgement etc., but the bad thing is they won't really give you a break.

It was about $2500. Which is about what I settled for, since fees, interest etc. had raised the amount to about $3200.

I hadn't paid on the account since last December. The law firm was Blatt, Hasenmiller, Liebsker & Moore. I have read a lot of bad things about them, being unethical etc., but the woman who was my contact there was actually pretty nice. They are out of Chicago, and even though I live three hours from there in the middle of nowhere, they had a local attorney that handles cases in my county. In fact, there were three other cases in the courtroom with me, all sued by Blatt etc.!! And they were all debt cases! Good grief!! I couldn't hardly believe it!! We were all laughing among ourselves, that what a small world, all of us in our little tiny county, all with the same problems, and sued by the same lawyers. Their attorney there was actually a very nice man though, and even though my case was settled ahead of time and dismissed, he was really working hard with the other people to find payment plans they could afford.

By 'dv' do you mean debt verify? No, because I knew I owed the debt and they had all the correct information on the first letter they sent me. I did not pay any legal fees. That was worked into the total amount owed, which I would have had to pay if I hadn't settled and if a judgement were claimed against me for the total amount owed. But because we were able to come to a settlement before the court date, and the case was dismissed by them, I did not have to pay any legal fees. So, like I had said above, I had mixed feelings about this settlement. It turned out alright in the end, but of course we all hope for more than just 79%. When they send you a summons, they sort of have you over a barrel. You take what they offer. Although when it was made official in writing with my settlement company, Target did knock another couple of hundred off.
