I filed for chapter 7 a few months ago and the whole thing has been processed. I tried to open a new bank account last weekend at Bank of America (BOA), but they told me I couldn't because I had some negative information on my Chexsystem report.

My Chexsystem report shows an account I had with US BANK before I filed for chapter 7. Although it doesn't say I owe any money on it (obviously since I filed for bankruptcy), but the reporting reason is showing up as "Account Abuse".

Do I need to contact chexsystem to remove this negative information if i want to open up a new bank account? Can I even remove it at all? How am I suppose to rebuild my credit if I can't even open up a bank account?

Bankruptcy will not remove you from chexsystems. Recently many have been able to be removed by sending in letters requesting removal. Technically the bank can still report up to 5 years and they do not have to remove you. Yes, you can dispute based on the vague indicator of " account abuse"

Depending on where you live there are many bank and credit unions that do not use chexsystems and others that will allow those reported to open accounts.
