Relax, dammit! Breathe!
That's better...

It sounds like you're figuring things out pretty well on your own. But since you asked, let me 'splain it for you.
First off, ain't nobody going to come and get you over an old payday loan. There is no debtor's prison in the United States. You can't be arrested for owing money.
Secondly, your account of the call reads like a litany of violations of federal law on the part of the collectors. The only thing these thugs can do is try to frighten the money out of you. They have nothing legal, no power to compel you to pay. Believe me, the very last thing that they want is for this to wind up in a court of law. The case would quickly get tossed out, and you'd crucify them in your countersuit.
You have two options on how to proceed at this point. One, you could simply tell them to piss up a rope and hang up. And keep hanging up when they call back. Or two, you could record (if that's legal in your state) their calls, or document them in writing, in hopes that they'll let slip some scrap of contact data that will allow you to serve them papers in a civil case for FDCPA violations.
I have a guide booklet that I wrote just for this type of thing. It's forty-odd pages, and it will explain a lot of what's going on, and what to do about it. Download a copy (for free) here. Read through it, then get back to us with any questions you still have.

well I got suckered in.the accent was sooo difficult to understand. All I heard was that an acquaintance of mine was using my name in a fraudulent matter an I needed to call back for my own safety in this legal matter.I called back, the heavily accented gentleman said his name was Scott Lance and repeated the story.I asked which State dept. he was calling from, what was the nature of the fraud, how was my information used and he just kept giving me vague answers.I asked for his supervisor and would you belive the SAME GUY got on the phone using a huskier tone and said he was Supervisor "Jim Brown". I couldn't help asking "really, are you serious, you've got the same heavy accent that Scott Lance has,is this some sort of scam, are you guys picking American sounding names off a list thinking you're fooling anyone?" I was still scared though so I called up my associate and advised her to immediately desist from using my name as a reference in any way.Jeez, they're going a LONG way just to collect on a debt.thank goodness for the internet or I would be pulling my hair out trying to figure what the heck I've ended up in!!!!

Yeah they stopped calling me for a while - several months, actually, but now they're back, calling me at work claiming to be the "Police Department" and all kinds of crap. I just listen, tell them I'm not gonna pay, and let them hang up.

do not worry too much.. anyone who picks up the phone (except for one of my bosses, of course) will know it's a scam when they hear the voice.. it is not just the accent, it's the script they make them say.. it's almost funny, they say things like good luck if you do not call us back, stuff like that. weird..

I am from CA and received the same call...I think my mistake was that I faxed over a letter stating that I was going to pay and want to know will this be held against me. I was told to take care of this matter outside of court and for me to do so was to pay $395.00 and if I don't then I will be arrested from my job or home. That scared me and that was why I agree to pay this. So after looking up there US Crime this is what I found. I had a feeling it would of been a scam but wasn't really looking into til now. I am really not sure what to do with them. I had Officer Jason Hatch and some other Officer calling saying the same thing. I am really going to need some help on this.

as long as you didn't give these idiots bank or cc numbers.ignore them, but i would file police reports for the threats.also file AG,and FTC complaints.now if you gave them that info cancel it.just know they are a scam, and paying these clowns will only result in more clowns from the same scam calling.if they call just hang up on them.that is what they deserve.

you can file those complaints online.use the number you gave on your other post as reference.do not be scared.let your boss know it's a scam, and file the complaints.these are losers who either stole or bought info from pdl's.they are a scam, and can't doanything except call.stop the cycle now,and hang up in their face.have your boss do the same.

I do greatly appricate this info. I will be filing a complaint and will let my boss know as well if they do call again...and today was when I was to give them the payment and it had to be done by a credit card ONLY...I asked to do this Western Union or Money Gram and was told this was the ONLY way of making this payment. He was telling me to go to WalMart to get a prepaid credit card and there I was thinking like that is very werid...but thanks again

This is great info---I've received 20+ calls in the last few months and am getting very upset. I will definelty file a report-
My calls were identical to the previous messages--from an "Officer Bishop" giving me a case number and return number of 901-457-4225 from the US Crime Suspect Dept. With a HORRIBLE accent--can't even understand him and calls several times a day. At one point we did ask for his information and supervisor and he cussed me out adn told me to never call again.
But as with all the calls-I'm in grave danger, major consequences will happen, something shocking and I need to be ready to do some hard time..
This is so horrible for anyone who actually feels threatened by this and gives them money---I wish something could be done....I'm in Colorado so it looks like they are making their way around.
Glad to find this post and I will definelty report to the authorities.
THankYou So much
Thanks for posting this message i got a call this morning with the same thing with a 901 457 4225 number.Which he was a A hole,i reported him or them to the local police dept and next it will be the local news.So beware when a number comes in 901 457 4225 from Tn.

Well guess what I am a victim too. My calls started last week from Federal Legislation Customer Affair Law Firm. The mans name was David Cook and he is a paralegal for Russell Miller. He had me scared enough to commit to making payments on my old debt. I made a $100 payment on 2/17. I asked for a statement in writting and so on but he refused saying that he didn't have too because of this and that. I did received a receipt in the mail for the payment from a Calif. Management Company in New Port Richey FL. Oh by the way he says he was calling from Irvine CA. Well yesterday a payment of $150 was supposed to be deducted from my account but I took all the money out so they could not get the payment. He called me at work which I already had told him not too do and asked why the payment would not go through. I told him he would not get anymore payments from me due to his fraudlent representation and that I have filed a criminial complaint against his company. He was recording the call but he did not tell me that. I knew because of the dead air in the background. I love how they tell you that they are a officer or paralegal and all you hear is call center noise in the back. He just scared me so much last week that I gave in. I will not pay them, but know I am scared he will continue to call me at work and also my friends.
I did not hear from him anymore yesterday but from reading the postings I don't think it will stop.

I also have received calls. Thursday 2/25/2010 I received a call from an Officer John Brown. He called me at work and he wanted to read an affaidvant to me. I told him I was at work and that I could not talk. He gave me a number to call which is the 901 number that has been posted. So I called my home phone to check my voice mail and there was also a message from him. So I was fired up. When I got home I called right away. I aked who I was speaking with his name was Officer Jim Black, so then I asked for Officer John Brown, I had figured out the scam okay. So I am trying to listen to him but I cannot understand him so I ask for someone who speaks English, I get put on hold and I get Tom Travis, cannot understand him. He trys to tell me info and I just told him that I am not stupid and just cut too the chase and tell me who I owe and how much. He wouldn't tell me. I had him so flustered he refused to talk too me. But I know it is not over so I will be stressed out.

DON'T ANSWER THE PHONE!!!!!!!!
Do not get stressed out by these scum bags. The more you ignore them the quick they go away. If you happen to talk to them, laugh in their face and hang up on them. Show them you are not scared and after that stop talking to them.

I received a call from an officer Marie Watson from the US Crime Suspect Department regarding a friend who put me as a reference for something. The lady had a VERY thick accent and I was unable to correctly write down her number. Im not sure how to stop these calls but no longer want to receive them in regards to a matter that has nothing to do with me. What can I do?

These people are from the pits of hell. Yes, I received one of these calls and was initially disturbed by the call but as I continued to speak with this "foreign accented person", he kept stumbling over his words. There is no department of blah blah, whatever they call it. They are trying to extort information from you. I think the better business bureau had a letter on its' site explaining that payday sites had been hacked into by some "undesirables". So, contact the payday loan companies directly and try to work with them. If you can, do not use these people who claim they can help you with your situation. Put your boxing gloves on, get your computer and letter writing skills ready. Write and fight these crooks. They are nothing but scam artist and want to intimidate people. I had eight payday loans and 7 of them are gone. I have stacks of paper to AG, BBB, FTC etc, anyone who would listen to my complaints about these people. Read and learn your rights. Many of us have overpaid on these scam loans but you can get these people off your back. Just keep at it, you can do it.

I had a friend who was getting these calls on her cell phone REGULARLY... so i answered the phone for her and "took a message" and then later that night I called the number back and asked to speak to whoever it was (don't remember now) and the person answering the phone had the nerve to ask me if this was business or personal... I said personal and he told me that so and so was not allowed to have personal calls at work. Seriously?? The worst part was that they tried to tell her that they were an atty and even gave a real atty's name and address but when pushed for the bar license number they couldn't give it. There was also a little kid in the background that you could hear and some woman was po'd at whoever was on the phone. That is when we just started answering the call with "FBI agent XYZ badge number (random numbers) this call is being recorded" and the calls stopped.

Received a call today 3-11-10 from Josh Gilbert (Indian accent) from the U.S. Crime Suspect Division claiming a lawsuit was filed against me and I needed to act qucikly to resolve it. He quotes a Case File # then asks for verify your name and last four digits of your SS#. When pressed about where he was lcoated he said he was from Memphis Tennessee at (901) 457-4225 (bogus number).

What do you mean illegal payday loans? I have never had a payday loan in my life or any kind of loan or credit card or anything and I am getting several threatening phone calls a day from this "man". He tells me my address, ss#, email address.
So how did he get my info? By "illegal payday loan" that would mean that I have taken out a payday loan, but the people that operate the company are scammers? As I said, I have no loans of any kind...ever. The most I have done is inquire about a car loan online but I ended up just saving and paying cash for a car. This really concerns me. How do they have my info?

I have recieved 9 calls in the last 26 hours from these people, identifying himself as jack with the office of james johnson in all but the first call..then he was sean with the office of josh jameson... i answered and was truely concerned until he began to ask me to fax a paper to them that had a company name of American Eagle Services in the info he wanted me to fax them... my husband answered a call from him a little bit ago and was told that sean was an officer with the U.S. Crime suspect department and he was down right nasty with my husband and hung up on him... these people are an outright joke...i am going to have fun messing with them when they call me back and i know that they will...

I, too, have been receiving these calls. Last month I received it from a "Law Office" and I recorded the conversation. They stopped calling me, but about two weeks later, just yesterday, I received the exact same type of calls from "US Crime and Suspect Department." If it wasn't for this posting and everyone's great responses, I may have given these people money! I will now be filing a police report on them, as well as reporting this to my State's Attorney's Office. Today I faxed these scammers a letter (to the same fax number they wanted me to send the "authorization") stating that they are a scam, that I dispute the debt and don't owe them or anyone they represent any money, and to not contact me by telephone. I'm not sure it will work, but I'm hoping so. It's embarrassing to get these types of calls at work - and I'm a paralegal!!!
Thank you everyone for your posts on this subject!!!

I have had this call from this number mulitple times. Since I do my research on unknown numbers, I ran accross this website... Along with a TON others! They have been calling my best friend, my job and who knows where next. Luckily, I answer the phone and work and told them NO ONE is here by that name! So, STOP calling!!!
What a bunch of Indian a**holes! This is ridiculous. I even went as far as calling the Missouri Attorney General's Office. She instructed me to NOT pay anything and that it is a scam.
Oh, and to add to the ignorance... When I actually called them back "Officer Bishop" wouldn't give me the name of the company. What a load of forgeign CRAP.

I got a call from someone in south Florida identifying himself as Special Agent Marcus Wyler with the FBI, Badge number 0178, looking for some named Julie F********. The caller id identified the number as from Keys, FL - 305-848-9278. We have never heard of her, but then he asked about an old P.O. Box that we had some years ago, and that she had been receiving illegal drugs at this box and that the case had led to an overdose, and this was now a homicide case. He indicated that there was a warrant for MY arrest, but gave me an 800 number , 1-800-717-1579, to call within 30 minutes in case I decided to remember any more about Julie. He asked me if I drug tested my employees, and that I could spend time in prison if I did not cooperate. Well, obviously this rattled me, as I did not suspect fraud at first, and ended up driving to my attorney's office to find out what to do. On the way there, I had the insight that something wasn't quite right, and looked up and called the REAL FBI in Miami to find out more, and they indicated it was probably a scam, but took a detailed report. The agent I spoke to called the number, and at first was hung up on, then called back and he said he was with the FDA, not FBI.
I was very relieved, but this f****r ruined my entire day and put my wife through a great deal of stress. I am telling this to everyone we know, and I hope someday it stops. I also had the number that he called on, which we have had for 15 years, disconnected. It seems that Julie may have used our PO Box and number at some time in the past to open some sort of credit account.
You know, posing as a Federal Officer is a crime, isn't it? Shouldn't the law mean something? I mean, I am subjected to the law, so shouldn't these people be?

Same thing happened to me, but now they are leaving messages at my work. I filed a complaint with the FTC and the CA state attorney general's office and I guess that's the most that can be done at this point. The best advice I can offer if to notify the credit bureaus to place an alert on your credit and change your bank account information.
