I think this letter is to the point and concise, nothing that should tick a creditor/collector off. Bear in mind, these people want to collect on the debt regardless, so whether you ask for validation or not, they can still be jerks....

a question--when you say "an old debt", how old? And what state do you live in? Each state has a statute of limitations for debts....if this debt is outside that time frame, then a couple states actually have a law that makes the debt no longer collectable after that time.

I doubt the letter is from an attorney. Many collectors use letter head and writing to make look official but usually it is a collector that you are dealing with and not an attorney. Regardless it is wise to validate.
