Can a collection company in Los Angeles call me more than once a week? Can they threaten me, sue, judgement, lien on my upside down property?
They were very sarcastic and said very nasty things to me.

they can call you more than once a week, the fdcpa states a 'harassing' number of calls is illegal, but does not specify what that number is. it is generally understood to be more than 5 or 6 calls a day from what I hear.

they cannot threaten bodily harm or harass you in any way. Check your state laws for liens, garnishment, etc.

They are not allowed to say nasty things to you. Reference the FDCPA once and they usually back off.

A C&D letter will stop them, but please note that this can, in some cases, accelerate the account to legal status, and in these cases I feel it is better to put up with the calls while one saves money to pay the debt off.

who is this bottomfeeder?i would get a DV and C&D letters out asap.send them certified mail return receipt.with the DV letter they cannot do squat until they prove these things.

1)the debt is in fact yours
2)they are licensed to collect the debt
3)the amount of the debt
4)the original creditor

get those letters out asap.to tmftwiz, nobody should have to put up with threats from a bottomfeeder or even think about paying them without validating.

I agree, my statement was more of a general one, not necessarily for this specific situation. If someone is blatantly violating the FDCPA then by all means exercise your rights, I was simply stating a personal observation that I have seen accounts go to legal status quicker if a C&D is sent out, in which case it becomes a question of what you'd rather have: no harassment but a lawsuit, or harassment but no lawsuit? Sure they don't have the right to harass you, but personally I'd rather let them continue to call and mess up so I can use that to my advantage later on. That's me personally, I know most people would probably just want it to stop, and in which case yes, a C&D would be best.
