Got a call on my answering machine from the legal department of Check Collection of America regarding "my checking account." I don't have a checking account. They told me to call back as soon as possible or it would be forwarded for further legal action. They gave reference number. I called and they said I had written a check that was returned. I informed them I didn't have a checking account. They asked if I lived in such and such town which I did not. "Oh we must have the wrong person" and then hung up.

Isn't the message they left on the answering machine breaking the law? Has anyone had anything to do with them? Thanks!

I had the same message left by someone named Stephanie, with a control number to reference saying they had sent me a demand letter, which I had never seen, but when I called the number back, there was no answer, no recording, nothing. I found this odd. Has anyone else had this problem?

Don't fall for their threats. They are scam artists. A class action lawsuit is in order for these creeps!

I have just recieved a letter from these people called Check Collections of America telling me the same thing about a check. I called company this check was written to, and they said they had nothing outstanding for me, and then I called this CCA company, and the line was busy (weird for a collection agency to have one line??) and once I got thru, I talked to a Mary Winters, who said they were working on a warrant for me if I didnt pay , but I never had a check out. I talked to my local DA, they didn't have anything for me. So when I tried calling back Mary, the phone stayed busy. I am not sure what to do from here. Just very strange...Any suggestions??

First check your credit report and find out if any one has opened an account on your name.It might be an Identity Theft as stated earlier. There are lots of scam going on so do get an update of your credit report.
Next time if any one gives you a call regarding same, take down the name of the company, the phone number and the address and report to the police.

I used to work in the mortgage industry before & I know quite a lot about these scammers. The company is in Houston,TX. Its not even accredited with bbb & has a rating of F. Check out the link--http://www.bbb.org/houston/business-reviews/collection-agencies/check-collections-of-america-in-houston-tx-52954/

This is their physical address & I bet it must be some closed warehouse or storage.

Yes, they are still at it! I just a message about a check that was supposedly written to an issuarance in 2007!! Anyway, the person on the phone couldn't say what insurance company (naturally) but to call their 'legal department' who was ready to file a legal action. Same 800 phone #. Called the number and the person answering rushed through the information regarding to whom the check was written (never heard of them), an address that I had never lived at. I couldn't understand her and had to ask her to repeat the name of the company 3 times. When I told her it was not my check, she continued to ask if I was sure I had never lived at a certain address. I have lived at 2 addresses in the past 25 years, I think I would remember. So, finally I was told to disregard the call....we'll see.

I filed complaints today (8/10/10) with the BBB, Attorney General for the State of Texas, and the OCCC (Office Consumer Credit Commissioner) for illegal collection practices.

I have CCA (Check Collections of America Inc) recorded saying that they were filling charges for an nsf check from 3 years ago. Funny all of the studying that I did on the web stated that 3rd parties and/or collection agencies can not file criminal charges for bad checks (that they may have purchased). I also included in my complaint that they do not have a Surety Bond that is required for all collection agencies in the state of Texas.
If you are having problems then I would submit complaints with all of the same authorities as I did above. The attorney General takes complaints via their web-sit bvery user friendly.
Good Luck!

This is a copy of the letter that I filed (on-line) with the OCCC, BBB, Texas Attorney Generals Office and the FTC. If more of us file complaints online then maybe we can make a difference. It only takes a few minutes to do. By the way I do have the recording of the conversation with CCA and for $50 you can buy a recorder that attaches to your phone (cant be a cordless phone, you will need the old fashioned phone with cords) from any Radio Shack.

Regarding Complaint Against: Check Collectors of America, 2650 Foutainview Dr., Ste 225, Houston TX 77057

August 13, 2010

Today, I called CCA (Check Collections of America) and spoke with (and recorded the conversation that I had with a lady only naming herself as) Ms. T, today. The phone number that I called was (713)532-7383. I verbally requested a cease and desist and that all future correspondence be mailed.
The reason for this letter is that I have filed complaints with the FTC, Attorney General???s Office, The OCCC and the BBB. I have read the Attorney Generals web-site regarding fraudulent debt collection tactics. I believe Check Collections of America (CCA) to be in violation of fraudulent or deceptive practices; which are prohibited.
I was told (by Ms T.) that she represents an attorney (Eileen) and that she was going or has already filed an affidavit with the District Attorneys Office for a hot check. I know that debt collectors are not allowed to deceive consumers with the following:
??? False representations implying that they are attorneys or that there is the involvement of an attorney in collecting a debt; Use of a false name; Falsely indicating the legal status of papers or forms sent to you; False representations that you have committed a crime or that you will be arrested or imprisoned;
I believe that CCA is in violation of the Fair Debt Collection Act. There are also penalties and violations in regards to the Texas Debt Collection Act. Check Collections of America (CCA) are subject to criminal and civil penalties. These violations could also result in an injunction and damages against CCA. These actions are also violations of the Texas Deceptive Trade Practices/Consumer Protection Act which gives the Attorney General the authority to take action in the public interest.
As I stated to Ms. T that I have contacted St. Lukes Hospital (Where the alleged hot check was written) and was told that this check was not returned for

I got a letter in the mail reagrding the ballance of an unpaid bill. I didnt recognize the bill as anything I/We (small construction company with a couple people authorized to charge) had bought and owed on. A month later I got a call from these people CCA, and after some dialogue (they were not very forthcoming about anything) I determined that someone had not paid the ballance on the bill and the debt was in fact owed (483.14 ballance on 1,058.14) so i made arrangments to pay it in two installments. Friday they aggreed to call for first payment, they called and hour earlier (im in california) than we arranged, i missed the call because i was in a meeting. I called Monday morning and talked to Mr. green and Ms clark and made a payment (the first half was all I authorized) and told her I would talk to her on friday for the ballance, and please, if i dont amswer leave a message Ill call back. she said okay and we hung up. i checked online to see if the charge had gone through...NOT ONLY DID IT GO THROUGH, SHE CHARGED THE CARD AGAIN, FOR THE BALLANCE WE HAD AGREED TO PAY ON FRIDAY!!! 500 bucks isnt the end of the world by any means but she collected the ballance thinking I wasnt good for it and she was just gonna get it her way, right now, while I "have money"!...Im not a broke scumbag, Im actually doing the opposite of what most people they call do, Im calling them to pay! If I owe I owe, i have never NOT PAID a bill in my life!...Long story short, I called the bank, turns out they agreed and are crediting the amount back to me and will investigate...bottom line, the fraud line guy told me if i disputed and did not authorize the charge he had to then record me saying, basically under oath that i did not authorize the second charge...to my debit card, the guy straight away said that the biggest red flag is that if i had authorized the entire amount why didnt they just charge it once? second it was made several minutes after the first. Anyhow, Im going after them. They overstepped some serious legal boundries.
If anyone has a simillar issue id like to hear about it.
