Hi, I'm just trying to find out if I would obtain credit by paying a collection agency. I have an outstanding bill from a SUNY(state Univ. of NY) school that I've been paying through a CA called Mercantile Adjustment since 2004. The amount originally began at just over 8 grand and I've worked it down to approx. 2 grand in the last 4 years. I've been told that I would get credit from friends and family. I checked my credit report and it shows I have ZERO credit and that I have had NO outstanding obligations(according to freecreditreport) Is there any reason that this CA would not show up on a credit report? Thanks for any help you can give.

youre actually better off if it doesnt show on your report because any negative entry hurts, but if all you have is negative entries it REALLY hurts your credit score.

your best bet would be to try to build some credit. look into something small, maybe a gas card or store credit card. be careful not to overdo it--get one account at first, dont get 6 different cards or you will most likely bury yourself in debt. Then, when the bill comes, pay it in full every month. The goal is to use the card, but not a whole lot. Use it for gas each month, then pay it off. the constant habit of charging a balance, then paying it off soon after will show up as a positive entry on your report and then you will be well on your way to establishing good credit.
