Hello,

Since my husband has lost his job, we have fallen behind on all our bills we have about 5 CC that total about 25000.00, a Timeshare. a car that we are upside down on. that I worrying any day now they will come and get. the only thing that I don't want to lose is our house. we have tried doing a loan modification but they say since my husband lost his job we don't qualify for. we have gotten to the point where we don't answer the phone because we don't want to be pressured into something that we can't afford. not sure if we should try Debt consolidation or debt settlement. any guidance would be much appreciated. for the debt consolidation any good companies and ones that I should stay away from.

You may go for debt settlement for the cc amount which may lower your cc debt amount to a certain percentage. In debt settlement program, you get the time to accumulate the requisite funds. During that time you're not going to pay debt to the creditors. For loan modification you can contact a loss mitigation expert who'll be able to negotiate on your behalf for getting the modification approved. Try to lease your timeshare to extract some money. You may have to forgo the car. In the mean time your husband should try for an immediate job.

Do you have 0 income at the moment? I would suggest settlement but it will not help you much with your home and car, unless freeing up the cc debt you will in return be able to catch up on your home and car. settlement would be my suggestion to the cards, but if you wont be able to catch up on the home and car you may have to let them go.

I am sorry about having to let your house and car go...it does suck, but there is still help out there. It will take a lot of pinching and saving, but it can happen. I agree with the other poster about having your husband look for an immediate job. We have had some super tough times in the past (we lost our home and both vehicles) and thankfully my father in law had a house we lived in, and we borrowed a vehicle until we could buy one (an old d-50 dodge pickup that my husband traded a shot gun for)-the quickest cash was waiting tables. I was able to work when hubby was home with the kids so we weren't out paying for a sitter and we only had to report enough tips to make it min. wage so the rest was all cash. I live in a SMALL town (of less than 1500) and made about 75-100 a night.

Hope this helps some
Chrissy

Have you thought about banckruptcy? In bankruptcy you can keep your car and house if you can afford to make those payments. Your other debts may be discharged. It really depend on whether you will qualify for chapter 7 bankruptcy. I would consult with an attorney in your state that handles bankruptcy. Debt settlement is a better way to go if you can afford to pay your living expenses and a smaller amount towards your debt, but if you can't afford to do this then Iould consider bankruptcy.

We checked into Banckruptcy and we don't qualify and the cost to file was expensive with the price they wanted I could have settled some debts. we tried the debt settlement and they really weren't doing anything on our behalf. the only thing they did do was contact the lawyer that was suing us. but when the lawyer contacted DS back they never got a return call. we are moving into a less expensive place. and have contacted two creditors and offered to settle with them waiting on there response. also to update my husband has gotten a job at less pay then what he was making but less pay is better than no pay.

Finished paying off two creditors, yea!! two down and about 4 more to go. question should I pick one that has a low balance or one that has a higher intrest rate? I was thinking one with the higher intrest rate my husband wants to do a lower balance one so that it looks like we are make better progress.. any suggestions?
it feels and looks like a long road but when you make a final payment if feels good.
