Internet Gambling Debt - What should I tell the credit card company
Date: Mon, 01/12/2009 - 01:10
I have lost plenty to these rigged internet gambling sites. I want to dispute the charges with my credit card company but I do not want to tell them that I didn't authorize them. Plus I don't even think they'll believe that due to the amount that I will be disputing (A few thousand)
Does anyone have any idea what I could tell them?
I believe it is against U.S. law for banks to have any business
I believe it is against U.S. law for banks to have any business relationship with internet gambling sites or 3rd parties that transfer money for internet gambling. I don???t know how you can word it to dispute the charges other than stating they were not authorized charges. In a sense that is actually the truth. The charges were made illegally by the gambling site even though you authorized them. They are not authorized by U.S. law which supersedes your authorization.
If you dispute it quick enough then the credit card company will not be out money. They will just pull the money back from the gambling sites account. Personally I don???t agree with people playing on their and then pulling out losses but I think the gambling sites are dirty and are getting what they deserve.

There was a case a few years ago where a fellow in New York sued his credit card company for paying his gambling debts even though theu were illegal under the Wiretap Act and New York state law. The court ruled against him and remanded the matter to arbitration. However, that was before the new federal laws on internet gambling took effect so it could be a very different landscape now.

I don't play anywhere online or in a gambling joint. I can tell
I don't play anywhere online or in a gambling joint. I can tell you that most of the online places are rigged according to various news sources. One article I read reported that they were playing the tables and looking at all the cards to guarantee a win. It would be very easy for them to do that without anyone knowing. No gaming laws apply to online places based outside the U.S. so there is no real monitoring authority to at least guarantee the player has some kind of a chance to win. At least if you play inside the U.S. you know you have some odds even though they are all loser odds.
I think an individual should be responsible for actions they take but when those actions are breaking laws then sometimes it takes outside sources to help correct those actions. In this case the outside source is U.S. law making it illegal for banks to make monetary transactions with known internet gambling sites. While the gambler themselves broke no laws the internet sites did.
Unless You Are In Nevada
Dispute the charge as unauthorized. Unless you live in Nevada, most states prohibit the enforcement of gambling debts.
Tell the bank to go @#$%^&@ themselves.
Thanks guys
Thanks for your help I disputed the charges today. They sites are a joke I wish government took a full ban on it or at least govern it themselves. At least that way you would be assured its 100% random
