I am currently totally disabled my only income is from social security. I live in a rent controlled apt, I have not car or anything of any real value and I keep getting harrassed by collectors threatening me on debts that I cant afford to pay. After reading this site and doing some research I have found that my income is not able to be garnished as none of my accounts are for government things. (unpaid medical bills, an old telephone bill, etc) is there a way to get these collections agencies to quit calling me. Also if I do send a cease and desist and tell them I am on social security can they still call or does that violate the fdcpa? Any information would be greatly appreciated. I live in Ohio. Thank you in advance for your help.

I could be mistaken, but from what I've read on this and other boards, once you send them a cease and desist letter, they have to stop contacting you.

I'm pretty new to all this, so like I said, I could be mistaken. Just hang around long enough and someone that's been around longer will answer your question.

I understand that the debt isnt going to go away. But I cant afford to pay it. I only get 585 dollars a month, I know everyone says that is low, but I didnt work that long. I was a housewife for 20 years until i got a divorce from my husband. I didnt get any alimony or anything as I just wanted to be done with the whole situation. I just need help.
