I have a creditor garnishing my wages and then clearing out my bank account. Same creditor. Everytime I call them I get a different answer on how much I owe them.

I wrongly ignored the bill for years, but recently decided I wanted to fix up my credit, pulled my report, and called everyone on it I owed money to set up payments.

I called them and they originally said I owed 600 dollars and some change. I made a payment, but my next one was late due to my absent-mindedness. My payment was already in the mail to them 5 days late when they started the garnishment. They took 25% then cleaned my bank account out after my check direct deposited.

I called asking them about this and NOW they tell me it's for two seperate things (all in the same time period from about 4 years back) and my balance was 1109.37 then they hung up on me. I called back and got a different lady. She said they had not deducted my 500 dollars they had taken and the bank garnishment had a balance of 82 dollars, but the one from my work was still 600 and could not be stopped. Leaving me with a balance of 622 right? Today they took 200 from my check and took 586 from my bank....that's even more than the 1109 they said BEFORE deducting the 500 they already had.

Am I wrong in thinking something very illegal is going on?

I'd contact the bank, and tell them that they are taking money out of your account that you did not authorize, and dispute what they took out of your account. Tell the bank they are already garnishing you. The bank SHOULD reverse the charges. I would then close that account so they don't have access to it.
