Palisades
mbreal1,
Palisades is a HUGE collection agency, perhaps the largest. I am not sure of your circumstance however it may be due to information changing so many hands before it gets to palisades. Over the last decade I have seen my fair share of credit reports. Tracking a collection that becomes 2 or three years old can be pretty difficult. I can't tell you how many times I've sat down with a customer and read through their credit report. When we come up to a recent Palisades collection the balance owed will usually correspond with an outstanding balance of some other debt from, say Old Navy. OK, easy enough. Palisades is has bought and now collecting upon an Old Navy debt. Easy enough. However the older the collection becomes the harder it is to track. The folks at palisades could be telling you that this debt came from ABC reconcile partners. This is the company that bought it from the previous collection company which bought from another collection company. The original creditor sometimes gets lost in the shuffle.
I do not work with or for Palisades. I know their reps can get pretty aggressive. They are a collection firm and that's what they do.
I would recommend ordering a tri-merge credit report and seeing if you could find out what they're talking about or asking them for the contact information from the company in which they purchased the debt. If you don't owe the debt than you should be able to resolve the issue with palisades with a couple of phone calls.
Hope this helps.
Thanks for Your Comment
Well my circumstance is similar to others that I have read. I paid an account off with AT&T almost 2 years ago that was placed with a collection agency. I owed the bill and I was okay paying it in full. The bill has now resurfaced again for the same amount at Palisides Collection Agency with a different account number. I sent them a dispute letter with back-up information regarding the pay-off and letter from the collection agency where I paid it. Palisides said that the account numbers don't match therefore they will not honor the pay-off letter. I called AT&T and asked about the account number Palisides referenced and they have no record of any such account number. In the meanwhile, I received another letter from a collection agency regarding the same bill which was sent from Palisides to another collection agency. I called Palisides and they basically said that they bought the delinquency from AT&T and the account number is what AT&T gave them and that there was nothing they could do for me.
Were the amounts being collected exactly the same?

Contact the AT&T Corporate Office, as long as it is not TOO old,
Contact the AT&T Corporate Office, as long as it is not TOO old, they should be able to help you. I contacted them about a 6 year old paid in full debt sold to Palisades, they could not help me because it was too old, but AT&T Corporate Offices tried at least. PM me for the email address I used, I don't think I am allowed to post it on here publically?
