I live in California.

2001. My ex had a capitalone credit card and added me to his account.

Jan 2006. Separation started. Asked ex to delete my name from the joint credit card. He said he did. Of course, I don't have the physical credit card and don't know the account number at all. He cut out the physical card away from me and cut it out in front of me.

Jan 2007. Divorce got finalized.

Jan 2009.
From equifax, I just found out that I still have a credit card from Capitalone, which I believed I got rid of when I started to separate from my ex.

Called Capitalone and they kept on transferring me to bankrupcy dept. I found out that my ex filed bankrupcy. The credit card limit is 1000 and the debt is 1300.

Credit cardcompany said that since he filed bankrupcy, his name got removed from the account and I became the sole owner of the account, which I didn't know the existence of. I told him that my ex closed account and they said that the balance that my ex incurred is still there, so unless I pay for it, it'll be still there. The due date is about a week away, if I can't find the answer, the debt will be bigger. It'll hurt my credit score.

I'm losing my job pretty soon and I have some unexpected medical bill that I have to pay too.

Am I still responsible for this debt?

Please help me and tell me what to do ASAP.

Thanks

Sad night in CA

I'm an attorney by no means, but I believe if you accumulated that debt during the course of your marriage, then yes you are unfortunately financially responsible for that debt. I even think that his bankruptcy will go on your credit unless the debt's paid. Contact a lawyer and find out your options.
