Long story- I am looking at debt settlement, am unable to pay on 8 cards to the tune of about $55,000.

I tried to go the credit counseling route and realized I could not make the payments. I made one payment last month. Was about 60, approaching 90 days behind on these cards. Some companies had offered hardship programs, rate reduction and payment reduction. I also noticed the fine print said that if I was even one day late with payment, everything would revert.

My question: If a company offers these hardship deals, is it worth it? They seem kind of open ended in that they could end at any time and you'd be right back at square one. Bottom line is, even if all 7 cc offered hardship and reduced payment, I'd still probably not be able to do the payments. But maybe I could do one or two.

What are thoughts on these hardship programs?

I believe in my opinion that is doomed to fail. I never had that offered to me before, but i did go through a debt settlement company and it was well worth it. It looks like you may be trying to avoid destroying your credit by paying, but if your already late your credit is already going down any how. If couseling is not working out your best bet in my opinion is a settlement company. or you could do it yourself but i felt it was easier on me to just let someone who knows more about it handle it for me, but if your well informed alot of people on this forum had great sucess but i did not.

but as for the hardship program like i said i dont know much about it, but you yourself are already feeling like its a bad idea listen to your gut
