Debt Collection in NC

We now live in NC. I received a civil summons for a written reply within 30 days. They have yet to validate the debt and the total is higher than what it should be so I will be filing that information with the court.
What I would like to do is wait until the statue of limitations is up and then pay the total I originally had with the cc company in full. I don't like them bullying me and I don't feel I should have to pay over $1000 more than the original debt because of their arbitration scam.
My question is how protected am I in NC? If I am reading correctly wage garnishment is not allowed in NC? I stay at home with our 3 kids and hubby is a teacher. We rent an apartment and have one car. It is 16 years old and in hubby’s name only. We have no real assets. Other than harming my credit is there anything else they can do to me?
They have worked hard to make me miserable over the last year and a half and I am tired of being bullied. I even offered them a pay-off and heard no reply back. I sent it certified mail and got a signature confirmation. I am even considering hiring a lawyer and would hate to do that over $2500 but at this point it is a matter of principal.
So.... is there anything they can do? Should I file with the court that I plan to pay the original debt after the statute of limitations is up or should I keep the details out of it and just mention the lack of validation? Or should I buck up and hire a lawyer? Thank you!

Since they have filed a suit against you, the SOL is stayed. They filed the suit before the SOL was up which could end up forcing you to pay what they ask.
Go after the lack of validation and make them prove it.
judgement from Mann Bracken
Mann Bracken also had a judgement against me for a debt. I paid all but 789.00 on a 4,000 dollar debt. The judgement did not specify any amount just stated that i had to pay the amount owed. I informed them that I did not have any funds to pay the remainder which is 789.00. They gave me until April to pay this amount. I put my home as an exempt and one vehicle. I have no other properties. What can they do or take if i do not have the 789.00 that remains on the account. I live in North Carolina. They are not willing to consider the account paid. Please help! I am not working and can not pay this small amount. They have me running scared. Since no amount was stated in the judgement is this legal. They said they could not consider it paid even after i sold a vehicle to pay them the 1200.00 and told them there was no more i could get.
