Debt settlement will help you to negotiate with the creditors and reduce the outstanding debt by certain percentage. Prioritize your debt according to amount owed. For debt settlement program, while you accumulate necessary funds, you shall not be paying to the creditors for months. So, creditors will report it as late payments or missed payments to the credit bureaus. Your credit score may decline to some extent. However, after paying off the debt, credit score will gradually improve. Moreover regular on-time payments of other debts will definitely raise your credit score in near future. To settle on your own http://www.debtconsolidationcare.com/steps.html can be a good choice. For further advice you may call the financial coach of this community. 800- 601-1579 is the number.

Welcome to the Community :D You didn't say what the amount or type of debt you have, or whether they are with the original creditor or not. This can make a difference when tryng to get out of debt.
I did our debts myself. Mine had gone into default, one was sent to collections, etc. I called the one that was sent to collection, and was still able to deal with the original creditor. I explained our financial hardship at the time and told them I really wanted to get them paid off, but need some help. I asked them to drop the interest and fees so I could get them paid off. On this one, they did that, put me in a hardshiip program for a year, and I paid them off, and got a PIF letter.
The other one in default, I did the same thing, they lowered my interest and payment and I did this for a year also, and got them paid off.
debt settlement is usually talked about after you are in default. I didn't want to do debt settlement beacuse of a bottom feeder I was dealing with, and was afraid they would "sell"" the balance owed. Be sure and get anything or terms in writing before you sign up or settle debts. Make sure that they will not sell the balance to someone else.
Feel free to ask questions..As far as the phone call- they are spoofed numbers, usually from collection agencies.
Aslo, document everything, keep notes and copies of everthing you do with your creditors..karen
