How do you identify "un known calls " ?

iI've received several calls which show as "unknown" on my caller id.
Is there any way we can trace this call to the caller ?

i am not sure i usually eventually pick up once as curiosity kills me! i do it sometimes to make sure they are even calling the right person. sometimes it may be a telemarketer or something and they usually stop calling if you tell them to. also i like to be "in the loop" over who wants money from me.
