UCB PRESSURING ME TO MAKE PAYMENT WITHOUT VALIDATION!
Date: Mon, 02/02/2009 - 12:33
UCB (united collection bureau) is a 3rd party collector for my citibank account which they have been harassing me about. I sent them a validation letter and they have not yet responded but I did send it CMRR so i know they received it already.
They had been calling me yelling at me and not identifying themselves etc. I now know to record the calls and that's what I'm doing. During the last call, I was offered a settlement of $5600 on a 12000 debt. Of course I don't have validation yet and the amount is higher than what I initially thought but I don't have those funds anyway so I did not accept settlement.
I received a call a few days ago with them telling me to at least make a payment. If I had money for a payment I would have done that with OC and they did not seem to understand that. They became arrogant and rude and kept telling me I needed to make a payment at the very least.
Wouldn't this be an acceptance by me to pay the entire debt if I were to make a small payment to them without validation?
Any advice on this? I'm assuming they will be contacting me soon on this again.

Was your DV timely? Sent w/in 30 days of receiving their initial dunning letter? If so, then any contact with you, verbally or written is a violation of the fdcpa. Record the calls and be prepared to file suit against them.

It was absolutely within the 30 days of first contact by UCB which was the 19th of January.
I mailed them the letter on the 27th and the call to get me to pay them something as a payment was on the 28th so I'm sure at this point they had not recieved it yet.
Where do we go from here? I have to wait obviously for validation from them. What then? Are they able to contact me once they have validated?
If they validate, then yes, collection efforts can resume.
