Hello, i have no idea if this is the right foroum, someone please correct me/ move this thread if I am wrong. This is about my younger brother. he is currently unemployed, no insurance. He went to the ER last night because of severe stomach pains. He left after 5 hours without seeing a doctor. Does anyone know how to handle this bill? He signed out but never saw a doctor. He still has stomach pains and is scared to go back because of the cost of it. I say he should go regardless and I am sure one of my family members will force him to go. But does anyone know how this works? We live in NJ, he was on medicaid at one point but his ex girlfriend kept throwing out his cards when he moved out so I have no idea if he is still enrolled with it (he does not know neither), they gave him the hospital's charity fund but they want proof of income and he has none at all! he has been out of work for a very long time.. i just do not know how to address the financial aspects of this because i always had insurance and my family does not know neither. we do want him to seek medical care regardless though..

thanks, i really appreciate your help.
i think he took care of the cat scans done (he 100% did not have it done, though he did prep for it, i remember my mom was actually with him at the time and they said no they want to rush into surgery.) though it is not removed yet (i think they said they will forward it or something, i will find out). It is more than half of the bill!
could bankruptcy be an option if he is unable to get help? i do not even see a payment plan being feasable (i personally work two jobs and could not afford a bill like that!).

If I remember right your brother is unable to work right? (both mentally & Physically unable to hold a job?) You did ask for chairty case right.. I think you mentioned you did. Just making sure all your baises are covered.

I would think he'd be able to file for bankruptcy due to the fact he has no income.. provided the state doesn't doesn't help.

thanks so much.. your advice really helps me and it also calms me down a bit :)
he is unable to work (mostly mentally but also physically) but is not receving any income at all right now (some red tape he has to go through in the process, my mother was helping him with that but my dad got sick and had to stop working also, so our family's hands are a bit tied).

i have a bit of an update.. he got a revised bill (which they said he would) and it said it had a reinhard allowance? i?? have no idea if am spelling that right but it dropped the bill down to $7,000.00.
the CAT scan is still on there, or did this correct the CAT scan? the medical billing department keeps stalling us and my mother said maybe we should draft a letter to dispute the CAT scans that he never had.. any thoughts on that??? does anyone know what a reinhard allowance even is?

thanks again, i am 100% sure, my brother was on the phone with us (they did not let us in, even our mother!) and he said he was prepping for it than he called us back saying they said forget the CAT scan he is going for surgery ASAP.?? this was also confirmed by a nurse later that night.

update: though he is working with charity care he was sent to collections for a $77 bill. now of course that is not an earth moving amount but it is for when he went to the ER, signed in and walked out without seeing a nurse. should he send a DV to the collectors or will they just make this an excuse to get a judgement? thanks.

an update, i guess he will send the DV because no service was actually done. (he will mention this in the letter). should he go into detail with this or send a straight dv? they mentioned a judgment, which worries him and it is only $78 but charity care who he is working with has his case pending and is not much help and he does not know if he should even be billed for this to begin with.

Not sure if he should be billed or not either, may depend on the ER's policy. He can state he wasn't seen in the letter, it may help. If he is on on the Charity thing-he can also take a copy of his letter stating he in on this tothe hospital.

I know my brother had to do this with some of his wife's bills. Some of them were sent and he took his letter up to them and told them and they took care of it,but his bills were in excess of over a hundred thousand-if that has anything to with it.

Good Luck..karen

thanks again for your help, karen..
he was not even sure if he should send this at all. if it is to be paid, he can cover it, no problem but we really do not know and charity care keeps saying it is all pending. i am not too worried about them because he's on file and they have a year to straighten this out with him.

hey, it's me again - sorry to keep going on with this.
my brother and my mom are still scared to send a dv letter! they are scared because the letter said an audit was done on him for this bill and if he request validation, they will provide verification or obtain a judgment.
would they even really do a judgement for $77.76? if money was not so tight for me, I would just pay the darn thing.. i still am not even sure if he should be billed as he basically signed in, waited in the waiting room for several hours and walked out.
should he just mail the dv letter? he only has about two weeks before his thirty days to request validation are up.

i forgot to mention that i did help him draft a letter, in which he nicely and professionally points out that there have are billing errors that he is currently disputing with the hospital and he would like to make sure this bill is correct as he was not seen by a doctor or a nurse that evening.
is this the right way to handle it? if he does owe, would they really get a judgement for $77? Like i said, we would pay if we had it to just get rid of it but we are unsure if he really owes them and we are unsure if this will hurt his charity care case (some things being billed while others are not, for example). charity care has not been too much of a help when it comes to this stuff, they said to ask a lawyer.
