recently received a settlement letter
Date: Sun, 02/15/2009 - 21:05
i recently received a letter from a cohen and slamowitz regarding a debt listing bank of america as the original creditor and midland management as the agency they got it from. my thing is they offerect to settle this 11000 for around roughtly 50%. but my concern is the number they listed as the debt theyre collecting on. the supposed original credit card number. i went back to my credit report and not one one of the old debts from bank of america started with the same number.. im not sure how to go about this. id like to think theyre legit. i had called midland management and they said they assigned it to that law firm. but i dont see that number listed anywhere on my credit report or portions of it. so what should i do?
Send a debt validation letter to BOTH cohen and midland, explain
Send a debt validation letter to BOTH cohen and midland, explain that you never had a credit card with that particular number so you require them to send you supporting documentation such as signed contracts and statements. Since none of this is on your credit reports this account may be so old that it is past the reporting period.
Wait and see what they respond with. But under no circumstances should you pay them without getting this documentation and if you do pay them once getting it, make sure any settlement is in writing.
