My husband became disabled and we too found ourselves being sued by 2 companies. The judge will not care about your medical or financial woes. If you owe they will get a judgement. We recieved a notice of judgement and a date to come to sheriffs office. Very scary. We went and told them we did not have the money to pay. They were very nice and sent a letter back to court stating we did not have anything. So now we have two judgements on our credit. The judgements were put on our house. If we sell the house these bills will come out profit, first. Or when my husband dies (home in his name) I will have to pay off liens to transfer title. Or in a few years maybe we can negioate a smaller settlement with these law firms. The sheriff's office said the law firms rarely came after your home to sell and get payment, because they have to pay realtors and such cuts into thier profit. If one does run to bankrupty attorney for an emergency filing to hold onto your home. Don't be talked in refinancing your home at a out rageous interest rate to pay off these judgements. I know the pressure is on. I spend many a sleepless night worring, with that lump in the throat feeling. Hang on to your families home pay your mortgage first. We still recieve letters from the law firms for the creditors asking to settle, maybe one day we will have the money to settle for less and have them removed or die and pay them off with life insurance.

I would send them letters saying you have no assets, no money and no checking accounts so they should not waste their time with you. It sounds like you are insolvent and pretty much judgment proof so screw them, they can try to get something from you but its doubtful there is much, if anything, for them to take.
