Your bank account can be garnished only if the creditor has brought judgment against you to do so. Without a judgment, the bank account cannot be garnished. Now, since the bank account is operated by both of you, it cannot be judged whether the money in the account is yours or your wife's and so the creditor can garnish it. This process of garnishing your bank account will continue till the time the debt is repaid in full.
