Today I received a summons from Greene and Cooper representing American Express. It was served by a deputy on my county's clerk of court form. It demands judgement for $7935.02. However my Amex balance is 3392.60. I have been making payments via my online access to the Amex account. I have proof of all of this. The Amex website shows no payment due at this time.

Additionally, when I received the letter from Greene and Cooper last September, I wrote them asking for verification. I never received anything else.

Could I get some suggestions on how to answer this summons?
Thank you.

You should visit the clerk's office in the court from where you have received the summon and first file an answer to the summon, otherwise the creditor may bring a default judgment against you. After filing an answer to the summon, you should send a debt validation letter to Greene and Cooper. You should also keep the proof that you have made the payment towards the debt to American Express, which you may produce before the court as a defense.
