Can i negotiate Amex settlement offer ?

I have received the sett. offer from Amex after 1 year i did not make payments. It is surprising since they sent me to CA and i received the CA letters many times. I
They offer me sett. for 55% from the balance. But the bal is much higher than the original amt since the 1 year int & late fee added.
Can i negotiated to settle less than what they offered me? how should i do that? i heard some pp can settle for 30% from Amex.
I lost my job but i will try to borrow some $ from relative to settle asap.
Hope anyone who has experiences w/ this will help me !!!!

Who did the letter come from? Are you sure it is from Amex...or

I agree with guest. This offer must have come from a collection agency. Please inquire about the debt. Send them a debt validation letter.
