diy debt settlement

Can I settle some accounts myself and others using a company? I am thinking of trying to settle my BoA account myself and then using a company to settle my Citi, Home Depot and Discover cards. I have heard that BoA is somewhat easy to work with,they are my largest creditor at 17K, but the others aren't. I am afraid to work with the others and I really fear being sued and messing up a possible settlement. Any experience would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
