Chapter 7 - when can I file again?

I filed Chapter 7 in July of 2001 - it was discharged in May of 2002 - Is it 8 years after the filing? or 8 years after the discharge before I can file again? I have a $36000.00 medical bill and I need to file again ASAP. Some things I have read tell me I can file now - but it may not be discharged until May of 2010 - that is fine - if that is correct.....who knows? Any help out there?

For chapter 7 it is 8 years from your previous filing date.
It was changed to 8 years by the 2005 bankruptcy law update. Bef
