Can't Make My Payments
Date: Fri, 03/20/2009 - 12:51
I now finally have a job that pays well, $45000 a year, but at this point, we are at a point where we can't make our minimum payments. I have created a detailed budget, but I am finding, even after pulling out all "un-necessaries", that we are still behind ~$65.00 a month. When I mean all un-necessaries I'm even referring to not being able to see a doctor or save anything. I have contacted two non-profit debt consolidation agencies and both have said they can't lower our payments, just turn it all into one payment, which is unhelpful, because the issue isn't that I can't remember to pay, it's that we don't have enough money.
I **really** don't want to file for bankruptcy, as I feel I have a moral obligation to pay off the debt, but I don't know what else to do.
Additionally, my wife is not currently working. She has been looking for employment since December, but is having a hard time finding ANYTHING.
Thanks in advance!
James

Thats the thing with consolidation, it may shorten the term of the debt and interest rate, but it offers little if any payment relief. You should consider bk or settlement, but I would go with a reputable firm if I were you, preferably a law firm. If you like I would be happy to discuss your situation in more detail, please email me at email deleted. and I will be glad to help

relax, i just signed up today. it took me awhile to find your TOS after you cited it. i guess you are referring to #12 where it says do not put your personal info like email or phone # for SAFTETY reasons. it doesn't mention solicitation except for competing debt blog websites which clearly I wasn't doing. It also says please be respectful and courteous to other members and one of your moderators replaced me email with "nobody wants your email". thats not very courteous, especially to someone who only has a few hours experience with this massive website.

Anyway.......OP, when you DO choose a Repair company, please becareful. There are ALOT out there that SOUND good, but, once you actually get into them, they may not be as helpful as you think. Of course, as you explain your situation, BK MAY be the right thing for you. I understand you feel obligated to pay your debts, but..obviously events have happened that are beyond your control.

hang in there, there are some great companies out there that do mean well, you just have to do your homework to find out were they are sadly as the above post mentions there are many out there taking advantage of people in thier time of need right now. My advice is to take these steps,
first find out what program is right for you, and to find that out you will need to read up on all of them and know all the facts about all of them. (consolidation, settlement,bk)
once you figure out which is the best for your situation if you decide to use a company then you need to read up on the facts about those too. take the time, your debt is not going anywere and if you trust the wrong company you could end up worse than you already are.
dont feel bad about your situation most of us have been there, and were glad to help! let us know if you have any questions!

The "non-profit" debt consolidation companies were founded and still funded by the credit card companies. It's a way for them to collect on debt and double dip. There are much better ways where your debt can actually be reduced plus eliminate any new interest, late fees, etc. I can't find the TOS on this site and someone else just got reprimanded for saying something apparently against TOS. So, I can't determine if I can help you here or not.

rule of thumb,
you are not allowed to suggest a company in a post, but you can in a signature link, as long as you do not refer to it in a post. say like "check out my link"
you cant push not only a certain company, but a certain type of program. because not all programs are for every situation. say for instance settlement is not for everyone, so i cannot suggest to everyone that settlement is the answer because its not.
this is to be a informative forum, were people can gather info to help them reach a decision without someone telling them what to do. you can help people here, but if you break these rules you could be out to make a buck and no one wants that.
so if your hear to help, by all means stick around, but if your here to promote a certain program or company, then this site may not be the best place for you.

love_my_things, I'm a little confused and concerned so thanks for the clearing up of things. But reading through some of the posts, how can someone post something poorly about one company and yet someone cannot post their positive interaction they had with the same company. It would appear to me this would be slighted. I am new to this forum, but in other forums that I belong I am happy to share my positive experiences with my debt settlement company. Isn't that what a forum is for? Of course, not every company will meet the person's needs but wouldn't it be wise to have some valuable insight as to the experience(s).

i agree with you that its nice to be able to share a positive experience with a debt settlement company its hard to find! yet i think alot of concern is that there is a lot of advertising that goes on in here along with fake testimonials so that people sign up with a particular company when they may not be a good company at all.
All in all this is a very good forum and i really did not understand it either in the beginning, but they have the peoples best interest at heart. trying to keep them from scammers and solicitors which there are many. the moderators are on gaurd at all times for this and sometimes i think they overthink things sometimes but they do it because it happens so often that they assume soliciation off the bat. Its not thier fault, but the fault of those who is using this site for advertising instead of good intentions like it was intended for. The moderators are far from biased or slighted, just vigilant and for good reason.
say for instance you work for this company, and are in charge of recruiting you could easily come to this forum and say you were a former client, they were excellent, they did this and that, they did as promised, etc and when in fact you never was and people here are vulnerable right now and can be taken advantage of easily. so they are just trying to protect the people so if that is slighted or biased, maybe it is, but i will take it because its for good reason.
I myself used a settlement company that did very well for me and would love to tell everyone to use them, but from the information that i put out there, if they are interested in who i used they can figure it out pretty quickly without me putting it out there in a post.

love_my_things, thank you for the insight. I did not even look at it like that. Really was looking at from a helping standing point. Especially there are several companies not worth looking into but a few quality ones that are.
I guess if people want to know further they can always get in touch with us personally. I do not have any negative intentions or re-directing but would rather provide my story and let others know there is help out there and they are not alone. As for me the biggest part of being so in debt was feeling like I was alone and with no where to turn. Giving others hope or least a direction would be a good thing.
Again thank you for the insight.

Tami,
You can post your story in a different section on the boards. It is the success stories on winning from debt.
I may be wrong but in the past we could mention a name of a company but could not post the e-mail address. And then you couldn't post the contact info, like phone number, addy, etc. People would have to either ask you in a PM for that info or go searching the internet for the company. But things could have changed.
For the OP, If you go with a company you need to check them out first. Get all the info you can about them. Check the BBB and then you can even check with your state to see if they have any complaints filed about the company. You can even get a list of companies that are licensed to do business in your state FROM your state. I did, then my DFI told me after I check out companies and pick one to use to give them a call to see if they have complaints with that company. So do your homework before you sign with a company. I would also check with your state to see if they have a program. WI has a program (I forgot what it was called) that you can sign up for through the state to repay your debts. I will look for the post and post a link to it. It is not a BK.

Here in WI they have what is called chapter 128 I do not know if there are any other states that offer something like this. If they did it would be called something else. But it is worth checking to see if your state offers such a program

if you follow the post aboves advice, you will do fine. And honestly tami, i have been were you are. WEre you know were you have been and wish to not see others suffer. I know thats why i spend so much time here. its a shame that you cant just offer the advice or pass on a good company. But the rules are for good reason, and you could do like the above post said and make a post about your sucess story, or you could blog like i do with a link in your signature to your blog about your story.
Personally my blog makes 0 dollars it has been going for 3 months now, and i really dont care. It has no particular theme, just whatever i feel like discussing weather it be debt, saving, shopping, making cleaning supplies, or just something i find interesting.
I have no intentions with it but it makes me feel good that maybe someone will come across it and find something useful or informing to thier situation.
People like us are rare, and somedays i think about just forgetting it. but somewere i may have made a difference or made someones life a little easier than mine, and someday i will be rewarded for that. Its important that you still stay that way even when the days are tough.
BECAUSE THERE WILL BE MANY!!
