I've been hanging in there for about 5 years trying to knock down the balances on 5 cards totaling about $20,000. Seems I've gotten nowhere once the interest and charges wipe out what I've paid. Now with a down turn in my business I've decide I'm through playing and want to settle these debts on my own. Can that be done? A good general rule of thumb is if you are able to save roughly 50% of your total balance (so in your case that would be $10,000) within 12 months (or 18 months at the most) you are a good candidate for debt settlement.
