Is it legal for a collection agency to send out info with your full SSN, when even the Big 3 CRA's cover the first 5 digits on their reports?

Hi Henry

Welcome to the forums.

The CA should not have printed the complete SSN# while contacting you. See, if the mail that was sent to you was not tampered.

As a precautionary measure, get a copy of your Social Security Earnings and Benefit Statement and see if your SSN# was not fraudulently used. Call 800-772-1213 or visit SSA's website at www.ssa.gov

I hope there is nothing to worry.

Regards
Roxette

Just check they (or the original creditor) don't use your SS # as a reference number also. I think some do.

A legitimate company should not share your personal information with other companies. Your information should be kept securely with them. If it is revealed that SSN# is being used as a reference, it might result in identity theft in some cases.

There has been a rapid increase in the number of consumer complaints regarding social security theft. Credit history can get ruined and life can become miserable.

Don't let your SSN# fall in wrong hands. Review your credit report occasionally. If you are not feeling comfortable to give your social security to a particular agency, don't give it. It might be misused.
