ohpp32,
Welcome to forums. Credit bureaus generally get informed from creditors. It is your creditor who reports your account status and your record is updated accordingly.
Probably the credit card company did not report your account to any of the credit bureaus and that is the reason it never appeared in your credit report.

Chances are that some collection agency will be engaged to collect this debt from you later. In that case, you will have to consider paying to them if the CA has legally purchased from the original creditor.
In my opinion, if you still have your creditor's information, make arrangements to pay this debt off. Accounts reported under collections are considered derogatory to your credit identity.
Talk to your lenders and try to get some payment arrangements. It will be helpful.

Since the credit card was default in 1989, its statute is expired. Can it come back to credit report if repayment starts? Just curious...

Yes, even if an agreement to pay the debt or a payment is made towards this account, the SOL clock will be renewed once again from the start.
As a result, all the collection activities will be become effective and you will be forced to pay this debt, perhaps legally.
You also need to look into this account a bit more deeply. The said account defaulted in 1989 and as per the FCRA laws, it should not appear in your file because it is past the 7 years reporting time.
If for any reasons, this account is shown in your file, you need to place a dispute with the credit bureau reporting it. An investigation will be conducted and if your dispute is found valid, the account will be removed and you will get a free copy of your credit report reflecting the change.
Is the account still appearing on your file?
