weird computer calls

One reason I am so curious is my mother had on occasion YEARS ago used my name with my maiden name to open credit accounts. She had and have crappy credit and not very much money. Mom passed away in 2004 so I'm wondering if she may have had some outstanding debt in my name that somehow they found my phone number-that is unlisted- and maybe this is what it's about? OR maybe sis, who I haven't spoken to in 3 years and who would follow in mom's footsteps for sure if she could find my info, somehow opened up something new in my maiden name. Sis also has little money and terrible credit and wouldn't be able to get any credit at all period in her or her husband's name.
Surely this is not what it's all about. But what else could it be?
I don't want to swear I'm the person they are looking for if it's going to start some sick chain of events! But I'd really like to know who is calling me and why?
Additionally, let me add this peculiarity...a few months ago another family member to me someone called my sister's mother-in-law's house asking for me by my maiden name! The caller was not a computer this time, or so family said, and they actually talked to the mother-in-law and get nasty with her when she said she didn't know the person they were asking about. They told her she HAD to know how they could find me!
What's going on? Could it really be sis and she used my name and her mother-in-law's address for me? If so...how do I find out what's going on?

Check your credit report immediately. If you suspect what you said about your sister, then file a fraud alert otherwise you make get stuck with the debt.

Next time take the call. You can swear you are you without any repercussions....you are NOT swearing that is your debt..key point there. What they usually do is then put on a live person. You simply tell them that the debt is not yours, but since it is in your name using your private information you need to check into it for possible identity theft. they should work with you (unless they are a bottomfeeder who don't care who they are talking to, only about getting a quick payment.)
Definitely check your credit reports as was suggested above, and get to work on any that are not yours or you are not sure about before they come back to bite you on the arse, besides, why have your credit suffer for a few bad apples off the family apple tree?
