In 2001, I lost a job and couldn't pay credit card debt I had -- about 14,000 dollars. By the time I was in position to pay again, the debts had been sold to 3rd party collectors. The dregs of 3rd party collectors, too (Asset Acceptance, Midland, etc). I will unashamedly say that these bottom feeding investors will get nothing from me.

I never answered their phone calls. Never replied to their letters. Never asked for validation. I just ignored them. I would constantly check the court calendar to see if they were going to try and sneak through a default judgment, but nothing was happening.

I expected them to try their usual tactics such as reaging the debt, but I just checked my credit reports and any mention of the debt is now gone.

They still send me collection notices, but it doesn't appear they have much recourse any more as the SOL has long since elapsed. I don't know why some people get sued and some don't. I was surely expecting to be sued.

I'm lucky too, because when I was younger I ended up in a very bad situation where I had outstanding PDLs, overdrawn bank accounts that were closed (I'm talking like $1K overdrawn), bounced checks, and some assorted department store credit cards. I was not able to repay any of it (I did repay the bounced checks as those went to the DA and I could have been arrested) and I did have to deal with collection calls, but I was never sued, thank goodness.
