Like many people here I too got a phone call from Mr. Sargent demanding full payment of a payday loan otherwise I would be served Court papers and be charged with fraud.
What I want to know is: this debt originated in Nova Scotia but now I live in Ontario. Can they even collect on an out-of-province debt?
Also, if they actually proceed - could I nip this in the bud by making a partial payment to the creditor?
I'm documenting all correspondence since I'm told threats of criminal prosecution as a means to collect on a debt is actually extortion.
Thanks!

Hi, I am in Canada. This company deals in old "debt". The rules in the Province of Ontario are that if no contact has been made for 2 years, then legally they cannot sue you but still ask to get the matter resolved. Please check under Nova Scotia and Ontario Consumer Protection laws. This will give you more than enough information to help you.
