A collection agency sent me a letter back in June of 2008 letting me know that they were trying to collect on behalf of the US Treasury for an overpmt of SSiDisabilty 2 years ago. I review my records and it was not correct. I contacted them and explained the situation, faxed them the info and told them I wanted a proof of claim. Then I contacted the Treasury dept and told them I was going through Financial hardship and asked that they not do this because I didn't owe this. They said the money was coming out anyhow. If the treasury made a mistake they would pay it back later. They took it alright from my SSI disability and my income tax refund. Just like robbing me blind. It didn't matter! Now I am still waiting on my proof of debt!!!!
What can I do now!!??

Yes they can do this. It happened to my dads friend. She had to work very hard and got to different hearings on the matter. But until it was resolved they kept taking her money. But after about a year she finally got through to them and they did repay hr the money they took.

But if you fight this be prepared for a long battle.

You need to talk with someone else--that makes no sense. What do they mean--in case you are overpaid? They are the ones paying you,so they would know what you are being paid.

When my son was switched from SSI to SSDI-there was an error, and he received an SSI check for a month he wasn't suppossed to. In that case, they withheld something like $40.oo for about 8 months until it was taken care of.
