How do I know if they can sue?

Another place has been contacting me for an amount that couldn't possibly be anything I owe. Even with collections costs and everything else, there's just no way, thinking back on ANY debt that I've ever owed-all paid. I've already read through pages and pages on here about them being "bottom-feeders," but I don't know how far they can go to collect this debt.
Thank you!
You can potentially be sued if the debt falls within your states
You can potentially be sued if the debt falls within your states statue of limitations. Every state is different.
My suggestion would be to send validation letters to each company.

If you disputed with the original creditor and they re-sold the debt without providing validation I think you would win in court debt you owe plus some not expert just sayin I think

well, techincally anyone can sue anyone. there are many reasons why sometimes people advise that a company will not sue. it is mainly because a company is not legal (this happens with payday loans a lot) or because one's SOL expired. There are different reasons. i also think sending validation letters out asap is your best bet.

You also mentioned that one of your debts is medical, and is with an attorney. In our area, there is a collection agency, who are also attorneys. These people just collect for the hospitals, doctors.
I have found that these local ones were the easiest to work with. The one company I mentioned, has been around for over 15 years. When my son was younger, he was in and out of hospitals alot. I just called them and told them I could pay xx dollars a month and stuck to it. As long as I was paying them, I never heard from them.
My brother had dealings with them too after his wifes stroke, and they actually helped him to file for charity case, since they had no insurance, and the bill was thousand of dollars.
Good luck to you..karen
